How glitch text works

The letters stay letters. Unicode combining marks create the distortion around them.

A combining mark is a character designed to attach to another character. GlitchType adds decorative marks above and below plain Latin letters A–Z, a–z and digits 0–9. The result is selectable text, not an image or an installable font.

You may know this look as Zalgo text or cursed text. Those names describe related uses of stacked marks. Here, intensity and direction give you control over how much distortion appears.

Low adds one mark per enabled direction and eligible letter. Medium adds three; High adds six. Remix changes the random marks while keeping your words and controls.

02 / BEFORE YOU PASTE

Make it work where you need it.

  1. Start with a short line

Type a heading, nickname or decorative phrase. Use Low intensity first. Turn off Above or Below if marks crowd neighboring lines.

  2. Copy, then test the destination

Use Copy glitch text. An app can reject, strip, clip or reposition combining marks. A successful copy means the text reached your clipboard; it does not confirm that another platform accepts it.

  3. Keep a readable version

Use Copy original text for an unmodified version of your input. Decorative text can be difficult for screen readers and readers with low vision. Keep instructions, contact information and other essential content plain.

One visible letter can contain many characters

A letter and its marks can look like one character but occupy several Unicode code points and UTF-16 code units. Platform limits use different counting rules. Our counters show both code points and UTF-16 units; neither guarantees a platform-specific fit.

03 / THE DETAILS

What changes. What stays.

Existing accented letters, emoji, non-Latin text and already marked letters are left as entered. Only plain ASCII letters and digits get new marks. A completely non-Latin input may therefore look unchanged. Previously decorated text is preserved rather than stripped or stacked again.

The input limit is 500 UTF-16 code units. In browsers with Unicode grapheme segmentation, trimming keeps whole grapheme clusters, including joined emoji and letter–accent sequences. Without that API, an over-limit input is rejected instead of risking a split.

Is this a glitch font?

It is often called one, but there is no font file to install. The destination uses its own font to render the copied characters. Image glitch effects and animated typography are separate tasks.

Why does it look different after pasting?

Fonts, line spacing and app rules affect rendering. Some fields count every mark toward their limit. Try fewer marks and test again; no tool can guarantee every field accepts Unicode effects.

Are my words saved?

No. Input and output remain in this page session. Reloading clears your edits. See Privacy for the distinction between local text processing and normal website requests.

How can I remove the effect?

If you created it here, copy your original text before closing the page. This generator does not clean arbitrary decorated input: removing marks can also remove meaningful accents.
